World Diabetes Day is observed on 14 November each year. World Diabetes Day was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to rapidly increasing cases of diabetes around the world. The day (14 Nov) marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who together with Charles Best had conceived the idea which subsequently led to the discovery of insulin in 1922.

International Diabetes Federation chooses a theme every year on the occasion to address issues of the global diabetes community. Topics that were covered as part of the theme in the past were- diabetes and human rights, diabetes and lifestyle, diabetes and obesity, diabetes in the disadvantaged and the vulnerable, and diabetes in children and adolescents. For 2009–2013 the theme Diabetes Education and Prevention has been chosen as the theme.

On the occasion of the World Diabetes Day-2010 the Indian Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad launched the urban slum health check-up scheme for diabetes and blood pressure.
