World's oldest person Emma Morano dies at 117

According to a list kept by the Gerontology Research Group, Violet Brown from Jamaica, who was born in 1900, is now the oldest living person.

World's oldest person Emma Martina Luigia Morano, believed to be the last known living individual to be born in the 19th century, passed away on 15 April 2017. She was 117.

She held the Guinness World Records titles for Oldest living person and Oldest living woman as per research conducted by the Gerontology Research Group in May 2016.

According to a list kept by the Gerontology Research Group, Violet Brown from Jamaica, who was born in 1900, is now the oldest living person.

• Born on 29 November 1899, Emma Morano was raised in Vercelli and later moved to Verbania on the shores of Lake Maggiore, Italy.
• Morano was five years younger than the Oldest person ever Jeanne Louise Calment, who lived 122 years 164 days, according to the Guinness World Records.
• She lived through the World War I and World War II.
• In 2011, she was honoured with the Order of Merit Award by the Italian state.
