Geometry is a fun section of mathematics that helps you develop visual-spatial awareness, understand two and three dimensions, and also apply geometry theorems in real-world contexts like architecture, engineering, construction, and game development.

Did you know the word 'geometry' has been derived from the two Greek words – 'geo', meaning 'the earth', and 'metron', meaning 'to measure'? Therefore, the study of geometry is traced back to the idea of the measurement of earth (i.e., land).

Now, story time. History tells that the Egyptians developed a number of geometric techniques for calculating simple areas and also for simple constructions, like pyramids. In the Indian context, studies show that the Indus Valley Civilisation (about 3000 BCE) made extensive use of geometry. 

In ancient India, the geometry of the Vedic period originated with the construction of altars and fireplaces which were laid down in accordance with instructions about their shapes and areas. These examples are proof that geometry was being applied everywhere in the world.

A Greek mathematician called Thales is credited with giving the first known proof by stating that a circle is cut into two equal parts by its diameter. And one of his pupils named Pythagoras developed the theory of geometry to a great extent.

And around that time, Euclid (father of geometry), a teacher of mathematics in Alexandria in Egypt, collected all the known work and arranged it in his famous treatise called 'Elements', which he divided into thirteen chapters, each called a book. These books defined the approach to geometry that we understand today.
