The main programmes of Department of Rural Development are Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, Rural Housing, Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana & Swaranjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana.

Rural development entails better social transformation and economic development of people. To provide rural people with enhanced prospects for economic growth, augmented participation of people in rural development programmes, better enforcement of land reforms, greater admittance to credit and decentralization of planning are visualized.

Originally, main drive for expansion was laid on agriculture business, education, communication, health and related sectors but later on it was comprehended that speedy development can be provided if governmental efforts are passably complemented by direct & indirect concern of people at the grass root level. Consequently, on March 31, 1952, an organization recognized as Community Projects Administration was made under the Planning Commission to oversee the programmes pertaining to community growth. Community development programme inducted on 2nd October 1952, was a significant milestone in the history of rural development. This programme experienced many alterations and was handled by diverse Ministries.
