Gaurav Gogoi was born in Delhi on 4 September 1982. His father, Tarun Gogoi, served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2001 to 2016 and was the longest-serving chief minister of the state.

Gaurav has a sister named Chandrima Gogoi who holds an MBA degree and lives abroad. In October 2013, Gaurav married Elizabeth Colebourn, who is British and an alumna of the London School of Economics. The couple has two children, a son, and a daughter.

Entry into Politics in 2014

In March 2014, the Congress announced Gogoi as its candidate from the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency. He won the election against the BJP candidate, Mrinal Kumar Saikia, polling 443,315 votes and recording a winning margin of 93,000 votes. 

That first win in 2014 was significant not just for Gaurav personally but for the Congress party in Assam as well. He came in as a fresh face with strong educational credentials and an international outlook, and he hit the ground running.

Re-election in 2019

Gogoi was re-elected from Kaliabor in 2019, defeating the Asom Gana Parishad candidate, Moni Madhab Mahanta.

Moving to Jorhat and Third Term in 2024

In 2024, Gogoi contested from Jorhat, where he defeated the BJP candidate and incumbent, Topon Kumar Gogoi. This was his third consecutive Lok Sabha victory and his first from the Jorhat seat, which his father had also represented in Parliament.

Becoming President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee

On 26 May 2025, Gogoi was elected President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. This was a major step in his political career, as he is now responsible for leading the Congress party's organisational activities across the entire state of Assam ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
