The vibrant glow of lanterns painting the night sky signals the arrival of a joyous occasion - the Lantern Festival. February 24th this year commemorates the 15th day of the first lunar month, marking the official end of the Lunar New Year festivities. From vibrant parades to whimsical lantern displays, the Lantern Festival offers a unique blend of tradition, celebration, and hope for the year ahead.

The Lantern Festival boasts an ancient legacy, dating back over 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty. Legend suggests the festival originated as a way to guide celestial spirits back to heaven after the Lunar New Year celebrations. Over time, it evolved into a celebration of unity, family, and prosperity.

Google is celebrating this festival with a special doodle and it states: “People have celebrated the Lantern Festival for over 2,000 years, but its origin is debated. Many believe the lanterns were first offerings to gods, and another popular legend details how townspeople used them to save their village. The Jade Emperor planned to burn a town, but its residents used glowing red lanterns to give the illusion that the place was already burning, and they were left alone.”

How is Lantern Festival Celebrated?

From dusk to dawn, cities across Asia come alive with the magic of lanterns. Here are some ways how this day is celebrated.

  • A sea of illuminated lanterns: Traditional paper lanterns, intricately crafted in various shapes and sizes, fill the skies with their warm glow.
  • Dazzling displays: Public parks and gardens transform into vibrant landscapes illuminated by elaborate lantern sculptures depicting mythical creatures, cultural symbols, and modern designs.
  • Festive dances and music: Dragon and lion dances pulsate with energy, while traditional music fills the air, creating a joyous atmosphere.
  • Delicious treats: Glutinous rice balls called tangyuan or yuan xiao, filled with sweet pastes, are a must-have treat symbolising family reunion and togetherness.
  • Wishing upon a lantern: Many write their wishes or riddles on lanterns before setting them afloat or releasing them into the night sky, carrying their hopes and dreams aloft.

Though deeply rooted in Chinese culture, the Lantern Festival has transcended borders, celebrated in various forms across the globe. The festivities are as diverse as the lanterns themselves.

The Lantern Festival is more than just a visual feast. It's a time for families and communities to come together, sharing stories, laughter, and delicious food. It's a time to reflect on the past year, release negativity, and welcome the future with hope and optimism.
