Great Wall of China 'Even longer'
The first detailed survey to establish the length of the Great Wall of China revealed that it is even greater than previously thought. A two-year government mapping study found that the wall spans 8,850 km, which was commonly put at about 5,000 km until the study. Previous estimates of its length were mainly based on historical records. Using infrared range finders and GPS devices, experts discovered portions of the wall concealed by hills, trenches and rivers. The study was carried out by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.
