This date was later converted to the Gregorian calendar for contemporary observance. Guru Gobind Singh was born in Patna Sahib, Bihar. He became the leader of the Sikhs at the young age of nine following the martyrdom of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, who sacrificed his life to defend religious freedom.

In 1699, he established the Khalsa Panth in a great ceremony at Anandpur Sahib. This included a dramatic initiation ceremony where he called for volunteers and eventually established a collective body of initiated Sikhs known as the Khalsa, emphasizing bravery and selflessness.
