On March 15th, Hungary commemorates its National Day, also known as the Revolution Day. This national holiday honours the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, a pivotal moment in the country's fight for independence.

Google also celebrates this day with a special Doodle showing the country’s flag waving high. Google Doodle mentions: “Today’s Doodle celebrates Hungary's National Day, commonly called Revolution Day. On this day in 1848, poet Sándor Petőfi joined a group of patriots at the Hungarian National Museum and recited the 12 Points of the Pest Revolution, a list of democratic demands.”

What is the History of Hungary National Day?

The revolution's roots lie in the growing dissatisfaction with Austrian dominance and a yearning for a more democratic Hungary.  On March 15th, 1848, a group of Hungarian patriots, including the famed poet Sándor Petőfi, rallied at the Hungarian National Museum. Petőfi recited the 12 Points, a list of demands calling for freedom of speech, press, and religion, as well as a government responsible to the Hungarian people. This ignited a national fervor, leading to mass demonstrations and the establishment of a Hungarian government.

The European Commission Speech Repository mentions: “The Revolution, during which the Hungarian people revolted against the Austro-Hapsburg rule, shaped the course of Hungarian history decisively. The country had been part of the Austrian Empire since the beginning of the 19th century and was therefore ruled by the Austrian monarch, but mid-century constitutional tensions and the desire for independence arose.”

“Hungary thus became the third country in Europe to hold democratic elections and set up a representative parliament in 1848. Although the Revolution was not successful, it constitutes a turning point in Hungarian history. Therefore, 15 March is seen as the symbol of the independent, modern Hungary and crucial for the construction of the national identity,” it adds.

What is the Significance of Hungary National Day?

Hungary's National Day’ significance goes beyond just remembering a historical event. Here's why it's so important:

  • Symbol of Independence and Democracy: The 1848 Revolution marked the start of Hungary's fight for independence from Austrian rule and the establishment of a democracy. Though unsuccessful militarily, it ignited a flame of national identity and the yearning for self-governance.
  • Foundation of Modern Hungary: The ideals of the revolution, embodied in the "12 Points" demanding reforms and freedoms, laid the groundwork for Hungary's modern political and social structure.
  • National Unity and Pride: March 15th serves as a unifying moment for Hungarians. It's a day to celebrate their shared history, courage, and resilience in the face of oppression.
  • Inspiration for the Future: The revolution's legacy continues to inspire Hungarians to fight for their rights and strive for a better future. It serves as a reminder of the power of unity and the importance of pursuing democratic ideals.

How is Hungary National Day Celebrated?

Here's a look at how Hungary National Day is celebrated:

  • National Colours: Hungarians proudly wear ribbons or clothing with the national colours: red, white, and green. These colours are displayed prominently throughout the country—on buildings, flags, and decorations.
  • Speeches and Music: Official speeches are delivered, often at the Hungarian National Museum, highlighting the significance of the revolution. Patriotic music and recitations of the national poem "Nemzeti dal" by Sándor Petőfi are common features.
  • Wreath Laying: Ceremonies are held to lay wreaths at memorials dedicated to the revolutionaries who fought for Hungarian independence.

Google Doodle mentions: “The Hungarian National Museum remains the place to be on National Day. People recite the Nemzeti dal (National Song), local officials give speeches, and wreaths are laid at memorials dedicated to revolutionaries. Many honor those who came before them by wearing a kokárda. Patriots have long worn these ribbons of red, white, and green — the colors on the flags that wave throughout the nation and in today's Doodle. “
