The festival coincides with Trayodashi Tithi of the bright half of Chaitra month within the Hindu lunar calendar, which starts on March 30, 07:09 AM IST and ends on March 31, 06:55 AM IST. It is celebrated mainly on March 31, 2026, as a gazetted holiday, with government offices, banks, and schools closed. States such as Delhi, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh are included.

This is when a large number of people can attend rituals in the temples and other community events making it one of the most important religious festivals in India.

Lord Mahavira's History

Lord Mahavira was born in 599 BCE in Kundagrama (now part of Vaishali, Bihar) as the son of King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala of the Licchavi Kshatriya family.

Following the death of his parents at the age of 30, he denounced the life of royalty in order to seek spiritual enlightenment, where he spent 12.5 years going through asceticism training of restraint and meditation.

He achieved Kevala Jnanam (infinite knowledge) under a Sal tree and took the next 30 years to preach in the Indian subcontinent, creating the four-fold Jain Sangha (monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen), and achieving Nirvana in 527 BCE at Pavapuri, Bihar.

What is the Significance of Mahavir Jayanti 2026?

Mahavir Jayanti (or Mahavir Janma Kalyanaka) is the symbol of the lineage of a soul that is free of sins and refined the Jain principles, making Ahimsa the utmost virtue and Satya (truth), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya ( chastity) and Aparigraha (non-possession) the Pancha Mahavratas.

It motivates the Jains to consider Anekantavada (many-sided reality) and Syadvada (conditional predication), and encourages tolerance and liberation of karma. The occasion reestablishes the everlasting character of Jainism in that Mahavira restructured the status quo of his predecessor, the 23 rd Tirthankara Parshvanatha.

Teachings and Legacy

These teachings of Mahavira are the Agamas, oral scriptures of Mahavira as compiled by his main disciple Indrabhuti Gautama that emphasized the immortality of the soul, theory of karma and moksha in the form of ethical existence in the absence of a creator god.

His focus on Ahimsa had a significant impact on such personalities as Mahatma Gandhi and the whole vegetarianism movements across the world.

There are now more than 4-5 million Jains around the world who share his ideals, and the institutions like Jaina Siddhanta Institute are also trying to keep the texts, to help the society of today understand the message of compassion, which he preached.
