India has been known as the Mango Capital of the World. Malihabad in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, is one of the world's most famous mango-growing areas in India, known as the Mango Capital of India. The mango production in the country for the crop year 2024-25 is 228.37 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) as per the PIB. In this way, India is the biggest mango producer in the world. 

In August 2025, the Union Agriculture Minister responded to a Lok Sabha question stating that India accounts for almost 40-45 per cent of the global mango production. This is the highest of any other country.

Hence, in response to the question of the Mango Capital of the World, it is India, and the centre of mango production in India is Malihabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Why is Malihabad called the Mango Capital?

Malihabad is a small town, close to Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. It is the biggest mango belt in the State. It is famous for the production of Dasheri mango, which is one of the most popular mango varieties in India and is well known in the world.

In Malihabad alone, more than 300 varieties of mangoes are produced. The area is blessed with a hot summer climate and deep, fertile soil, which is ideal for the production of good-quality mangoes. Here, the farmers have been growing mangoes for centuries and have been passing their know-how to the next generation.

The state in which Malihabad is located, Uttar Pradesh, is a big producer of mango, accounting for more than 25 per cent of the total mango production every year.

India's Mango Production: Latest Government Data (2025)

  • India has harvested 228.37 lakh metric tonnes of mango in 2024-25 (MoA and Farmers Welfare, Lok Sabha reply, July 2025).

  • India is responsible for almost 40 to 45 per cent of the world's mango production.

  • According to OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2025-2034, India's mango production is expected to be 36 million metric tonnes in 2034.

  • Continually, the India Mango Market is projected to grow by USD 2.46 billion by 2026.

  • In 2025, the mango production is more than 67 percent in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra among various states.

  • APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) is actively promoting the export of mangoes to the markets of UK, Japan, Russia and Middle East from India.

There are hundreds of mango varieties grown in India, but some of them are world famous:

  • Dasheri (Uttar Pradesh) – sweet, free from fibre and much exported.

  • A special tangy-sweet flavour of langra of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

  • Thought to be one of the most delicious mangoes in the world, Alphonso / Hapus (Maharashtra).

  • Kesar (Gujarat) - known as the "Queen of Mangoes"

  • Large, golden and delicious is Banganapalli (Andhra Pradesh).

  • Chausa (Uttar Pradesh) – extremely sweet, very thin-skinned.

Other Cities Called Mango Capitals in Their Regions

While India is the Mango Capital of the World, some other places have their own mango capitals:

  • Multan, Pakistan is “Mango City” of Pakistan due to sweet varieties of mangoes grown in this area.

  • Guimaras, Philippines is dubbed as the "Mango Capital of the Philippines. It's mangoes are so sweet that they have been known to have been served at the White House and Buckingham Palace.

  • Chapai Nawbganj is Mango Capital of Bangladesh. 

But none of these areas compare with India in terms of mango production or share in the world's mango production.
