Navratri 2024 Day 8: Colour of the Day – Pink

Day 8 of Navratri, also known as Durga Ashtami, is dedicated to Maa Mahagauri, the eighth form of Goddess Durga. The colour associated with Ashtami is Pink. This vibrant shade represents hope, beauty, and universal love, reflecting the gentle and compassionate nature of Maa Mahagauri.

Wearing pink on this day not only pays tribute to Maa Mahagauri’s nurturing and forgiving nature but also reflects the energy of peace and harmony that she embodies. By adorning this colour, devotees connect more deeply with the goddess's qualities of purity, patience, and tranquillity.

Who is Maa Mahagauri?

Maa Mahagauri is revered as the epitome of purity and serenity. Her name, Mahagauri, means "extremely white," and she is often depicted in a white or light-hued saree, riding a bull. According to Hindu mythology, Maa Mahagauri attained her fair complexion after undergoing intense penance to please Lord Shiva. Her story signifies the journey from darkness to light, as she symbolizes calm, wisdom, and inner peace.

What is the Story and Significance of Maa Mahagauri?

Mahagauri, meaning "fair and radiant," is a form of Goddess Parvati. According to mythology, Parvati performed intense penance to win Lord Shiva’s affection. Impressed by her devotion, Shiva accepted her as his consort. However, the severe penance darkened her complexion. To regain her beauty, Parvati sought guidance from Lord Brahma, who advised her to defeat the demons Sumbha and Nisumbha and then bathe in the sacred Ganges in the Himalayas. After completing these tasks, she emerged as the radiant Maa Mahagauri.

The eighth day, or Durga Ashtami, holds immense significance in Sharad Navratri. It is a day of powerful prayers, fasting, and devotion. Many devotees perform Kanya Puja or Kumari Puja on this day, where nine young girls (representing the nine forms of Durga) are worshipped and offered food, sweets, and gifts. This ritual is believed to honour the divine feminine energy and receive the blessings of the goddess for prosperity and well-being.

Maa Mahagauri’s divine energy is said to bless her followers with relief from suffering, fear, and past karmic burdens. Worshipping her on this day is believed to bring about mental clarity, spiritual growth, and material success.
