Weather Alert: On May 14, 2025, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) circulated the information that the southwest monsoon has finally begun with its arrival in parts of the Andaman sea, Nicobar islands, and some areas of the north Andaman Sea.
IMD has also observed an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea, which has the potential to develop into a low-pressure system between May 16 and 22. If this condition intensifies, then it can transform into a cyclonic storm, named ‘Shakti’ between May 23 and May 28.

Cyclone ‘Shakti’ is Named by Which Country?
The name cyclone ‘Shakti’ has been given by Sri Lanka this time as per the system. The eight countries bordering the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea – Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Thailand – suggest names for cyclones, which are listed sequentially.
In April 2020, The Ministry of Earth Sciences published a list of 169 cyclone names. This list included 13 names from each of the 13 member countries in the WMO/ESCAP region.
For India's contribution to this list, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had a committee. This committee looked at names suggested by the Indian public and chose suitable ones to be included in India's set of 13 names.
