What is Signal’s Username Feature

Privacy-focused messaging app Signal just upgraded its security game with the introduction of usernames. This new feature allows you to connect with others on the platform without revealing your personal phone number, adding a layer of anonymity and control to your interactions.

The company announced the update on its Twitter (X) handle and it mentions: “Introducing usernames and phone number privacy on Signal! We’re making it possible for people to connect with each other without having to share phone numbers.”

Why is Signal Introducing Username Feature?

For years, Signal has relied on phone numbers for user identification. While this approach prioritizes security by verifying accounts via SMS, it also exposes your phone number to everyone you interact with. This can be uncomfortable for people who want to keep their personal information private, especially in online groups or professional settings.

Now, you can create a unique username that serves as your public identifier on Signal. This username replaces your phone number when initiating new chats or being added to groups. You can share your username with anyone you want to connect with, while keeping your phone number secure and hidden from those you haven't explicitly shared it with.

What are the Benefits of Username Feature on Signal?

Signal's username feature offers several potential benefits for users:

  • Phone number masking: You can initiate conversations and connect with new contacts without revealing your phone number, protecting your personal information.
  • Enhanced control: Choose who can find you based on your phone number, preventing unwanted messages from people you don't have saved.
  • Anonymous interactions: Engage in discussions on groups or communities without your identity linked to your phone number.
  • Easier contact sharing: Share your username instead of your phone number, simplifying the process of adding new contacts.
  • Username search: Find and connect with others easily by searching for their username within the app.
  • Memorable identity: Create a unique username that reflects your personality or interests, making it easier for others to remember and find you.

How to Use Username Feature on Signal?

The username feature on Signal is still in beta testing and not available to all users. It might roll out globally later, but there's no confirmed date yet. Here is how to create a username on Signal

Creating a username on Signal:

  • Open the Signal app on your device.
  • Go to Settings and find the "Username" section in your Signal app settings

While still in the testing phase, Signal's username feature holds promise for enhancing user privacy, convenience, and discoverability within the app.
