Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is natural gas, mainly methane. It is delivered to homes through underground pipelines. In this article, you will learn where India gets its PNG supply from. We will also look into whether PNG is produced in India and how many PNG and LPG connections there are in India. Also, check the names of the Indian states with the highest number of PNG and LPG connections.

India LPG Crisis: West Asia remains critical for India’s energy security, as over 50 per cent of its crude oil and natural gas are sourced from this region. Any disruption in this region, such as the ongoing conflict in West Asia and closure of energy chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz, can create a risk of supply disruptions in India.

Data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell show the country produced 12.8 million metric tonnes (MMT) of LPG in FY 2024-25, accounting for approximately 40 per cent of total consumption of 31.2 MMT.

The remaining 60 per cent of the demand had to be imported. Though the supply of India’s gas is not entirely dependent on imports, India’s dependence on imported oil and gas has posed a supply disruption of LPG amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.

In the wake of the ongoing LPG crisis in India, the government is pushing a shift from LPG to PNG. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has prioritised Piped Natural Gas (PNG) over Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders.

The Indian government, on 24 March 2026, issued an order mandating households to switch from LPG to PNG within three months, after which LPG supply to a household will cease where PNG connections are available.

In this article, you will learn where India gets its PNG supply from, if PNG is produced in India, and how many PNG and LPG connections there are in India.

Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is natural gas, mainly methane. It is delivered to homes through underground pipelines. India sources its natural gas from a mix of domestic production and imports.

Domestic Production: India produces approximately 40-50 per cent of its natural gas domestically, primarily from the Western Offshore (Mumbai High and Bassein fields) and Eastern Offshore (Krishna-Godavari (KG)) basin, along with onshore fields in Assam, Gujarat, and Tripura.

The remaining 50-60 per cent of its natural gas is imported as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and LPG, passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The imported LNG is regasified to Piped Natural Gas (PNG).

Where does India import natural gas from?

India imports liquefied natural gas (LNG) primarily from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, the United States (US), Angola, Oman, and Nigeria.

Of these major suppliers, Qatar is the largest supplier of natural gas to India, accounting for approximately 47 per cent of total imports as of 2024-26.

Is PNG produced in India?

Yes. PNG is produced in India. Approximately 50 per cent of India’s natural gas is produced domestically. As of March 2026, domestic production stands at over 92-97.5 MMSCMD of a 191 MMSCMD daily requirement.

The Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin is a major source contributing to domestic production. Known for its critical deepwater reserves, the KG-D6 block features multiple fields, including R Cluster, Satellites Cluster, and MJ, which contribute over 25 per cent of India’s total domestic production.

How many PNG connections are in India?

As of March 2026, India has approximately 1.62 crore (16.2 million) piped natural gas (PNG) connections. Of these, about 1.03 crore are active consumers using the service.

How many LPG connections are in India?

As per the data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), India now has over 33.2 crore (332 million) active LPG connections, including more than 10 crore beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).

Which state has the highest number of PNG connections in India?

Maharastra has the highest number of piped natural gas (PNG) connections in India, followed by Gujarat. The state accounts for about 27 per cent of the total domestic PNG connections in India.

Which state has highest number of LPG connections in India?

With about 485 lakh LPG connections, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of LPG connections in India.
