Which Country Ranks First in Bauxite Production?

Bauxite is a sedimentary rock with a relatively high aluminium content. Bauxite is the world's main source of aluminium and gallium. Bauxite appears dull in lustre and is reddish-brown, white, or tan. Bauxite is usually strip-mined because it is almost always found near the surface of the terrain. The French geologist Pierre Berthier discovered bauxite near Les Baux in Provence, southern France, in 1821.

Global bauxite production is projected to reach 463.7 million tonnes in 2025. Global bauxite production is dominated by Australia, Guinea, and China. Global bauxite reserves are estimated at approximately 30 billion tonnes. Bauxite is primarily used to produce alumina and aluminium.

As of 2025–2026, Guinea has overtaken Australia to become the world's leading exporter and producer of bauxite. Guinea holds approximately one-third (approx. 7.4 billion tonnes) of the world's bauxite reserves.

Guinea’s bauxite exports jumped by 25% in 2025 to over 182 million metric tonnes, cementing its position as the top supplier.

Australia remains the second-largest producer, with an estimated 97–100 million metric tons in 2025.

China is the third-largest producer and top consumer, producing 60 to 90 million metric tonnes.

What is the rank of India in bauxite production?

India ranks 5th in bauxite producer globally as of 2024-25, with a total production of 24.7 million metric tonnes (MMT). Odisha dominates with over 70% of total production.

India holds significant bauxite reserves, totalling between approximately 3,400 million tonnes and 4,900 million tonnes. Of these 50 per cent reserves are concentrated in Odisha.

Odisha is the largest bauxite producer in India, accounting for over 70 per cent of the country's total production.

The Eastern Ghats region in Odisha (specifically Koraput, Kalahandi, and Rayagada districts) contains the largest deposits.

Major bauxite mining areas are in Kalahandi, Koraput, Sundargarh, Bolangir, and Sambalpur districts in Odisha.

NALCO (National Aluminium Company Limited) is a leading producer, accounting for about 31-33% of the total production.

Other significant producing states include Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh.

Gujarat is the second-largest producer with deposits between the Gulf of Kachchh and the Arabian Sea.

Key Facts on Indian Bauxite:

  • Grade: Roughly 79–84% of resources are of metallurgical grade, ideal for aluminum production.
  • Concentration: Major deposits are located in the Eastern Ghats of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Industry Use: The material is essential for manufacturing aluminum used in transport, construction, and power.
