Personality of the Day: Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya’s story is more than cricket. It’s about confidence, style, and never giving up. Learn why he stands out in today’s game.
There are cricketers who entered the world of cricket with a good plan, a smooth route and with everything they could ever require. Hardik Pandya was not among them. He came from a family that relocated to different cities in search of a dream, he left high school in the 9th grade to chase his dream, suffered injuries, was openly criticized, and suffered a series of personal disappointments, which would have broken the majority of people before they got started. But here he is one of the best all-rounders that India has ever ever had, a World Cup winner and the captain of the most successful franchise in the history of IPL.
Early Life and Education
Hardik Himanshu Pandya was born on 11th October 1993 in Choryasi, Surat, Gujarat. His dad, Himanshu Pandya, operated a small car loaning company in Surat. When Hardik was five years old, his father made a very bold decision. He closed down his business and took the family to Vadodara where he believed his two sons Hardik and his elder brother Krunal were to get more opportunities of playing cricket than they would have had in Surat.
The family resided in a small rented apartment in Gorwa in Vadodara and the brothers used a second hand car to reach their cricket academy. Himanshu sent both boys to the academy of former India wicket keeper Kiran More where he trained him free of charge in the first three years, just knowing that the family could not afford and the boys had the potential.
The Mumbai Indians website states: “One might say that former Indian keeper-batsman Kiran More played a crucial role in helping the Pandya brothers to where they are today. He saw Krunal play in Surat and told his parents to get the two boys to Baroda for training at his academy. Eventually, the family moved to Baroda to avail better cricket training.”
Hardik attended MK High School, Baroda, but dropped out of school in class nine to concentrate on cricket.

The Struggles Behind the Success
Interestingly, he did not start out as the seam bowler that the world would be familiar with but as a leg spinner. Hardik was not called on to try the new ball until one local league match in Baroda when his team was short of a fast bowler. The outcomes were phenomenal. And he had seven wickets in that match, and never looked back.
The ESPN mentions: “Hardik began his India career in 2016 when he was called up for a limited-overs tour to Australia, before impressing with the ball on seamer-friendly pitches in Bangladesh at the Asia Cup. He appeared to be the answer to India's search for a seam-bowling allrounder, and with his sprightly fielding added to the mix, he sealed his spot in India's squad for that year's T20 World Cup.”
Hardik Pandya Cricket Career
Hardik had his domestic debut in 2013-14 at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Baroda and he instantly attracted the attention of the selectors with his aggressive batting and energetic seam bowling. He was discovered in 2015 through an IPL talent hunt organized by Mumbai Indians.
His international debut was in January 2016 when he was invited to the T20I series with Australia. He later on in the same year made his ODI debut where he became the Man of the Match on his debut, becoming one of only a very very small list of Indians to do so.
In 2017, Hardik had his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Galle and performed spectacularly. His seven seasons with Mumbai Indians saw him win IPL titles in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020, and was released at the end of the 2021 season. Then followed his greatest chapter ever.
Breakthrough As Captain and World Cup Hero
Right before IPL 2022, Hardik was appointed the captain of the new Gujarat Titans franchise. He won the IPL title in their debut season, becoming the one of the first captains to win an IPL title with a franchise in its first year of existence. In 2023, Gujarat Titans made it to the final once again and this made his reputation as a leader even stronger.

In 2024, Hardik was reprimanded back to Mumbai Indians as the captain, replacing long-time captain Rohit Sharma. The relocation was met with a lot of criticism by fans. MI was eliminated at the very end of the table and the criticism was quite high.
But Hardik replied in the manner of a real champion. He entered the 2024 T20 World Cup, scored 11 wickets throughout the tournament, and bowled the last over of the World Cup final against South Africa and India won the trophy after a period of eleven years.
The story of Hardik Pandya is one of the most layered in the history of Indian cricket. It is the story of a father who gave up everything for his sons' dreams. It is the tale of a boy who wanted to prove himself.
