AIIMS Jodhpur Resident Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike After Colleague’s Death; FAIMA, UDF Extend Support
Resident doctors at AIIMS Jodhpur have begun an indefinite strike following the death of first-year resident Dr Raj Naresh Yadav. They have sought institutional reforms related to working conditions, duty hours and resident welfare.

Resident doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jodhpur began an indefinite strike on Wednesday, September 23, following the death of a fellow resident doctor. The doctors have sought accountability from the institute administration and demanded action on concerns related to working conditions, duty hours, workload and resident welfare.
The protesting doctors also held a candle march on Wednesday evening to pay tribute to Dr Raj Naresh Yadav, a first-year resident in the Department of Anaesthesia. He was found unresponsive in the bathroom of a doctors’ resting area during a break from his duty at the operation theatre (OT) on Tuesday afternoon and was later declared dead.
AIIMS Jodhpur Doctors Suspend Elective Services
Following discussions with students and colleagues, the resident doctors decided to suspend elective OT procedures and routine outpatient department (OPD) services from Thursday, September 24.
The doctors said the agitation would continue until the administration takes “satisfactory and time-bound action” on their demands. Emergency OPD and emergency OT services will continue to operate as essential services.
The Resident Doctors’ Association has called for measures to address working conditions, duty hours, workload, resident welfare mechanisms and institutional safeguards for residents and students.
Resident Doctors List Key Demands
Among the demands is a public apology and acknowledgement from the AIIMS administration, along with Rs 5 crore in financial compensation for the family of the deceased doctor.
The association has also sought the release of pending dues, benefits, insurance claims and other legitimate entitlements of the late doctor to his family, along with institutional support.
It has further demanded official recognition of the resident doctors’ association and students’ union to establish a formal communication channel between students, residents and the administration.
The association said its demands are aimed at wider institutional reforms concerning the safety, dignity, health and welfare of residents and students.
FAIMA, UDF Extend Support
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has extended support to AIIMS Jodhpur residents following Yadav’s death and raised concerns about long duty hours and workload.
FAIMA called for enforceable national duty-hour limits, mandatory post-duty rest, adequate staffing, a fair sick-leave mechanism and institutional accountability.
The United Doctors’ Front (UDF) also raised questions about the working conditions of resident doctors. UDF Vice President Dr Ankit Sharma questioned whether seniors, faculty members and heads of departments adequately intervene when a resident is struggling.
The organisation called for greater institutional support and urged residents, faculty members and administrators to address concerns before they escalate into crises.
