After receiving a number of requests to reduce the syllabus in classes IX and X for all subjects and specifically for Social Sciences, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) contemplates reducing social science syllabus, and henceforth has asked stakeholders to provide feedback over the issue via an online questionnaire. The board has decided to collect feedback on current syllabus from all the schools before taking any action.
The CBSE has designed the feedback questionnaire for all –teachers, students and parents to get an all-round view of the issue. From students the board wants to know how many periods are allotted to social science every week and what the most difficult part of the subject is. Students are also asked to give feedback on the most challenging chapters in the Social Science and on the chapters in which they found more content in syllabus.
The board also poses questions asking teachers, students and parents on whether it is right to reduce the syllabus. “Curriculum framers keep age appropriate syllabus and relevant topics for each class after several checks and balances. Is it wise to reduce the syllabus and lessen our knowledge in the subject," the board asks them.
Through the questionnaire, the board also wants to know why students feel burden in social science. "Is it because of casual attitude towards the social science subject or the lack of effective teacher or heavy content and lack of conceptual understanding or poor reading habits and lack of comprehension" asks one of the questions.
The CBSE will collect and analyze the responses after 03 October 2013 and then based on the conclusion would take a final decision.
