IAS Topper 2012 Debasweta Banik: Keeping Yourself Abreast with Current Affairs is Important

    IAS topper 2012(14th rank) Debasweta Banik discusses her strategy for main exam in an interview given to Kunal Jha of Jagranjosh.com. She also provides valuable tips for essay paper in the exam. Her optional in main exam were psychology and anthropology. She explains how to get good marks in the main exam.The Final result of Civil Services exam was declared on 3 May 2013.     jagranjosh: What was your strategy for IAS main exam?
    Debasweta: I focused on covering all the conventional areas, getting a conceptual footing in GS which helped during my prelim exam as well. I focused on regular newspaper reading throughout my preparation. It really helped me in framing my answers in the main exam.

    jagranjosh: when did you start preparing for UPSC main exam? What were your optional subjects for the Main exam?
    Debasweta: At the same time when I was preparing for prelim exam.My optional subjects were psychology and anthropology.

    jagranjosh:Which medium you used for the Main exam? English or Hindi?
    Debasweta: My medium was English.

    jagranjosh:  What strategy one should adopt for GS in main exam?
    Debasweta: I kept myself abreast with current events. I didn’t focus too much on segregating and compartmentalizing my preparation.

    Jagranjosh: What strategy one should adopt for GS paper 1 in main exam?
    Debasweta: GS paper 1 demands a thorough knowledge of basics. At a broader level both paper 1 and paper 2 are interrelated. My basic understanding of subjects like History and polity really helped me.

    Jagranjosh:What strategy one should adopt for GS paper 2 in main exam?
    Debasweta: This paper is current affairs oriented and demands awareness of current economic scenario, major events at global level.

    Jagranjosh: For essay paper what was your strategy? What tips you would like to give for essay writing?
    Debasweta: I didn't prepare for essay paper separately. Sticking to the topic and Concise writing is vital while writing essay paper. Clear and logical expresseion of Ideas fetch you more marks.  Reading good books, newspapers and magazines helps during exap preparation. Choose the essay topic intelligently. Too much focus on facts and figures should be avoided. Too much repetition should be avoided.

    jagranjosh:What should be the word limit for essay writing?
    Debasweta: 1300 to 1400 words are suffice.

    jagranjosh: How important is time management for essay writing?
    Debasweta: It’s very important while writing essay paper in the exam.

    jagranjosh: What is your advice for those students who couldn’t clear IAS exam?
    Debasweta: Don’t lose heart. There is always a second chance.

    Jagranjosh: How important is answer writing in UPSC main exam?
    Debasweta: It’s important because it helps you in securing more marks in the exam.
