The Joint Council of the Indian Institutes of Technology on 14 September 2011 decided to conduct a common entrance test for admissions to the IITs and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) from 2013. This means that the Joint Entrance Test or JEE for admissions to the IITs will be scrapped. Earlier, The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) had collectively decided to discontinue the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) and instead use CAT 2011 as part of student selection process for the Management Programmes from 2012-13 onwards.
The highest decision-making body of the IITs also decided to bring in a new but complex fee structure. All students at the time of admission will have to pay the existing fee but after they pass out 25% of students (other than SCs/STs/OBCs) who can afford the hike of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh suggested by Anil Kakodkar committee, would be made to pay the amount to their institutions in easy installments. However, if a student joins the IIT faculty, he or she will be exempted from payment
For admission to the IITs and NITs weightage will also be given to Class XII marks in the new common entrance test. The Board results would be equalised by a formula to be devised by the Indian Statistical Institute.
