With 117 students to begin with, the 18th Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) opened up in Palakkad (Kerala) on Monday 3 August 2015. Among these 117 students six are from Kerala and majority of the others are from Uttar Pradesh.
The HRD Ministry Smriti Irani while addressing the students through video conferencing said that the students must develop a social outlook along with pursuing their studies and should be able to contribute to the society at large. The IIT Palakkad is presently lodged in a temporary campus and admissions in four B.Tech steams have been conducted by the institute. For the time being the institute would function from the makeshift campus. The institute would shift to the main campus, which is scheduled to come up in a massive 500 acre plot of land near the place where it is presently starting its academic activities. Official opening of the institute would though take place later.
