The Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University, the rapidly growing hub of professional education in Odisha, has been ranked 26th in the country by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD).
The results of the much-awaited exercise, conducted by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) developed by the Core Committee of the MHRD, were announced in New Delhi today by the HRD minister, Ms. Smriti Irani. Only two universities from Odisha had found place within the top 100 in the country.
While SOA University was placed 26th nationally , Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, (IISB), Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi occupied the first, second and third positions respectively. Among the Universities which found place in the list, SOA was first in the list in Odisha and occupied the second position in the eastern region.
SOA University had recently been reaccredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of the University Grants Commission.
NIRF had scrutinized the universities employing various parameters which included Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research Productivity, Impact and IPR (RPII), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception. The report said “the data for the first four parameters, which account for 90 per cent of the weightage, was submitted by the institutions and verified by NIRF.”
The multidisciplinary SOA University, with a student base of around 10,000, had come into existence on July 17, 2007 when the HRD ministry conferred on it the status of a Deemed to be University under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
Focused on research and quality academics, the University has been churning out professionals in varied fields ready for the challenges and needs of different industries. It had identified 18 thrust areas for promoting research and set up 10 research and field centers besides 29 research labs. The university runs 58 post-graduate programs.
Courses offered by the University included, besides engineering and medicine, dental sciences, management sciences, hospitality and tourism management, hospital administration, nursing, pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, legal studies and agriculture.
The Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), which has the 750-bed Sum Hospital attached to it, aims at high quality medical education and health care deploying excellent modern and advanced diagnostic, surgical, life saving equipment and best medical facilities for the patients at affordable cost. It is the only teaching hospital in the state which has NABH and NABL accreditation.
