A senior biochemistry professor, H Devaraj at the University of Madras has been selected for the post of vice-chairman in University Grants Commission (UGC). Ex-student of University in early 70s, Deveraj joined it in 1984 as a lecturer at the Department of biochemistry. He will be appointed as UGC vice-chairman for coming three years.
His research subjects are Cancer biology and Cell biology. He served the university as a senior executive council member of the Madras University Teachers' Association (MUTA) and a former director of the University of Madras' Guindy campus. In addition, in absence of VC he also headed a panel that runs the university and also a former syndicate member.
In 2007, he was awarded by the university as the Doctor of science.
