8 September was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on 17 November 1965 and was first celebrated in 1966. The day’s objective is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. UNESCO on this day reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. The celebration's theme for 2007 and 2008 was “Literacy and Health”. International Literacy Day 2009 theme was "The Power of Literacy."Literacy and Empowerment” is the theme for the year 2009-2010.
