India Current Affairs 2011. Prince William and Kate Middleton were married at Westminster Abbey, London on 29 April 2011. Prince William was given the title of the Duke of Cambridge by Queen Elizabeth II, and Miss Middleton became her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cambridge on their marriage.

Prince William and Catherine (Kate) Middleton were married at Westminster Abbey, London on 29 April 2011. 1900 guests watched the couple exchanging their vows, while millions of people around the world watched the ceremony live on TV. Prince William wore a military uniform, a tunic, with a crimson and gold sash and gold sword slings, from the Irish National Guards. The Irish National Guards is a British Army regiment of which Prince William is an honorary colonel. Kate Middleton wore a gown of deep V-neckline, strapless bodice and elegant lace sleeves designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen. The couple travelled in an open-topped 1902 State Landau carriage for the procession, which was used by Prince William's parents for their wedding in 1981.The Queen Elizabeth II hosted a reception for 650 guests at Royal Buckingham Palace. Buckingham Palace is The Queen's official London residence. The engagement of Prince William to Catherine Middleton was announced on 16 November 2010.


28 year old Prince William, Duke of Cambridge is the elder son of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales. He is the third eldest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. 29 year old Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge is the eldest of the three children born to Carole Elizabeth, a former flight attendant and Michael Francis Middleton, who also worked as a flight attendant. Carole Elizabeth later had become part-owner of Party Pieces with an estimated worth of £30 million and Michael Francis Middleton later turned a flight dispatcher for British Airways who also own Party Pieces.


On 29 April 2011, the day of wedding, Prince William was given the title of the Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus by Queen Elizabeth II. After marriage Miss Catherine Middleton became Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge. The title of duke is the highest rank below that of monarch in the British nobility. The Dukedom of Cambridge was created in 1801. It became extinct on the death of the 2nd Duke of Cambridge in 1904. Cambridge existed as a Marquessate from 1917 when it was conferred on Queen Mary’s brother till 1981 when the 2nd Marquess died and the title got extinct.


Prince William


Prince William attended Eton College and studied Geography, Biology and History of Art. He studied at St Andrews University in Scotland and joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as an Officer Cadet. After being commissioned as an army officer in December 2006, he joined the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals) as a second lieutenant. He is a search and rescue helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force. Prince William was 15 years old when his mother Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997.


Westminster Abbey


Catholic monastery or convent, under the authority of an Abbot or an Abbess, who serves as the spiritual father or mother of the community is called an abbey. Westminster Abbey was founded in 960 AD. It hosted its first royal wedding in November 1100. The only people that can be married in Westminster Abbey are members of the Royal Family, Order of the Bath members and their children, and anyone living in the Abbey's Precincts.
