India’s largest mobile service provider, Airtel launched its 3G mobile service in Bangalore on 24 january 2011. Karnataka is the first telecom circle where Airtel launched its 3G service. Airtel introduced 2 types of 3G data services plans- time-based plans for light users of data where usage and billing will be by hour and flexi-shield plans for heavy users of data where usage and billing will be capped. There would be sachet packs of Rs 10, Rs 60, Rs 200, Rs 450 and Rs 750, and for heavy-users, the entry-level price is Rs 650 (up to 1.25 GB) going up to Rs 2000 (up to 14 GB).
Launches in other circles will happen in phases, in the next few months. Airtel that recorded 20.50 crore mobile subscribers base as on 30 December 2010 declared its plan to launch 3G service in 40-plus cities in 13 telecom circles by March 2011 and cover 1500-plus cities across the country by March 2012. Airtel, India’s largest telecom operator, paid nearly `12,300 crore for licences to operate 3G services in 13 operating areas, or circles.
The company has become the fifth telecom operator to offer 3G service in India. State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Ltd (MTNL) rolled out their services in 2009, while private operators Reliance Communications Ltd (R-Com) and Tata Docomo Ltd launched towards their end of 2010.
