Andhra Pradesh Government constituted SIT to probe Chittoor firing

The SIT will be led by Ravishankar Ayyanar and will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident that led to the opening of fire by personnel of Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force besides a probe into the case registered in this regard.

Andhra Pradesh Government on 24 April 2015 constituted an eight-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Chittoor firing case in which 20 people were killed in Seshachalam forest area of Chittoor district.

The SIT will be led by Ravishankar Ayyanar, an IPS officer from Andhra Pradesh cadre.

The SIT will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident that led to the opening of fire by personnel of Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force besides a probe into the case registered in this regard.

Background

Twenty people were gunned down inside the red sanders forests in Seshachalam hill ranges of Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh on 7 April 2015 in an operation by the police. The state police had registered an FIR under sections 302 (murder) and 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) against unknown task force personnel on the complaint filed by Muniyammal, the wife of one of the victims Sashi Kumar.
