The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on 23 June 2014 passed a Bill raising the retirement age of government employees of bifurcated Andhra Pradesh to 60 years. The Bill passed is titled Andhra Pradesh Public Employment (Regulation of age of superannuation) Act, 1984
Earlier, the retirement age of government employees was 58 years.
Besides, AP Government also assured unemployment allowance of 2000 rupees per month for jobless youth.
The government took the decision to increase the retirement age considering various factors, including the increased life expectancy. There was a significant improvement in the average life expectancy as compared to 1984.
The Union Government raised the retirement age of central government employees from 58 to 60 years in 1998.
