Bahrain’s king, Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, declared the 3-month state of emergency on 15 March 2011 to quell an uprising by the Shiite Muslim Majority of the nation. With the emergency or the martial law in force all the powers will be in the hands of Bahrain’s security forces. It should be noted that the security forces of Bahrain are controlled by the country’s Sunni Muslim elite.
In the latest development, Saudi Arabia, sent its military troops to Bahrain at the request of the latter’s Sunni rulers to assist in the quelling of rebellion there. This step taken by Saudi Arabia is likely to ignite sectarian tensions in Bahrain.
