It was declared on 26 January 2011 by the Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University that Calcutta University is among ten universities worldwide and the only one in India to be short-listed by the United Nations for its Academic Impact programme.
The Academic Impact programme was launched by the UN in November 2010 to bring the United Nations and institutions of higher education into close association for supporting ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, literacy, sustainability and conflict resolution. The programme had seen participation by universities from across ninety countries. Out of the participating countries, United Nations has selected ten universities across the world and vested them with the responsibility for setting the teaching-training agenda and research. Calcutta University that has a Peace Studies Group in the University since 1990 and recently established the Institute of Foreign Policy Studies was asked to conduct research on Peace and Conflict Resolution studies.
In the course of this programme, peace and conflict issues will be studied from the International as well as domestic perspective. Apart from studying the problems and relations between nation states points of co-operation will also be identified.
