India Current Affairs 2012. Delhi government on 28 February 2012 hiked the reservation for OBC [Other Backward Classes] in higher education institutions from 21 percent to 27 percent

Delhi government on 28 February 2012 hiked the reservation for OBC [Other Backward Classes] in higher education institutions from 21 percent to 27 percent. The new quota is set to be effective from academic year 2012-13.

The government, however, also decided to enhance the total number of seats by 12 per cent so that the increased quota for OBC doesn’t impact general category students adversely.

The current increase in OBC quota would take the total number of reserved seats in higher education institutions for SCs, STs and OBCs to 49.5 per cent. The SCs have 15 per cent reservation while the STs have 7.5 per cent.
The Delhi government had reserved five per cent seats for OBCs for academic year 2009-10 which was increased to 15 per cent for the 2010-11 and 21 per cent for academic year 2011-12.

The 27 percent reservation would be applicable in all the higher institutions in Delhi. Central universities in Delhi like Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University have already been providing 27 percent quota to the OBCs.
