Elattuvalapil Sreedharan to join UN's High Level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport

Metro Man Elattuvalapil Sreedharan was on 18 September 2015 appointed to serve the United Nations’ High Level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport (HLAG-ST). He was invited by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to serve on his HLAG-ST for a period of three years.

Sreedharan is a retired Indian Engineering Service (IES) officer. He is credited for changing the face of public transport in India. Under his leadership, Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro Rail projects were completed on time.

He was given the name of Metro Man by the Indian media for his grand success in executing the completion of the Delhi Metro on time and with stipulated budget.

He has also been conferred with various awards for his contributions including Padma Shri (2001), Padma Vibhushan (2008) and French Government’s Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur (2005).

About High Level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport (HLAG-ST)
• The formation of group was announced by the UN Secretary General on 8 August 2014 to formulate recommendations on sustainable transport actionable at global, national, local, and sector levels.
• The group will work with governments, transport providers- aviation, marine, ferry, rail, road, and urban public transport, businesses, financial institutions, civil society, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable transport systems.
• The group will provide a global message and recommendations on sustainable transport, including on innovative policy and multi-stakeholder partnerships.
• It will also launch a Global Transport Outlook Report to provide analytical support for these recommendations.
