Flash floods in Malawi; hundreds killed

Flash floods struck Malawi in the third week of January 2015. The flood caused by the torrential rain has swept away several houses and have killed at least 170 people.

Malawi in the third week of January 2015 witnessed flash floods due to heavy torrential rain. The floods swept away several houses and have killed at least 170 people. Malawi is one of the world's poorest countries.

Vice-President Saulos Chilima said more than one lakh people have been displaced from their homes, mostly in the south. The government has declared a third of the country as disaster zone and appealed for help.


Effects of the flash floods
• It swept away roads and bridges and destroyed thousands of hectares of crops
• It had raised fears if cholera outbreak in the southern half of the country
