Tourism Minister of Goa Matanhy Saldanha, died of heart attack on 21 March 2012. Saldanha 64, also held the portfolios of Science and Environment.
The BJP legislator representing Cortalim constituency was sworn-in as the minister on 9 March 2012 after BJP won the Goa Assembly elections.
Saldanha a two-time legislator in the Assembly had joined BJP little before the 3 March elections and was one amongst the five catholic candidates who were given ticket by the BJP.
He was first elected in the state assembly in year 2002 on United Goans Democratic Party ticket. He was lifted up to the rank of Cabinet minister by the chief minister Manohar Parrikar.
Saldanha had spearheaded the movement seeking right to traditional fishermen. He led National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF) and also battled against the special economic zones in Goa.
