In Maharashtra 11 lakh hectares of Rabi crops were damaged due to hail storm which has engulfed the state since last one week. The rabi crop damage is estimated to be worth 5000 crore rupees by the state agricultural department.
Heavy rains and hailstorm has adversely affected the parts of Marathwada, Western Maharastra, North Maharashtra and Vidharbha.
Out of 35 districts in Maharashtra, 28 districts are badly affected. Some of the worst affected districts are Baramati, Pune, Beed, Latur, Osmanabad, Nashik, Akola, Buldhana, Nagpur, Chandrapur, Amravati, Yavatmal, Washim, Jalgaon, Nanded, Nadurbar and Dhule.
Standing crops like wheat, jowar and onions have been severely affected. The cultivation of grapes, oranges, mash melons and bananas also have been damaged.
The state government forwarded the proposal for compensation to allow financial assistance to the affected farmers to the Union Agriculture Ministry. Union Agricultural Ministry has to seek the Election Commission permission due to the model conduct is in force for coming Lok Sabha Elections.
