In a historic feat, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully transmits a hip-hop song to Venus. The song took around 14 minutes to travel 158 million miles at the speed of light to Venus.

“The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” by Missy Elliott, a sensation song in the 1990s became the first hip-hop song to reach Venus. NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) made this transmission possible from their Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

How did NASA Achieve this Feat?

This celestial project made use of the 112-foot-wide Deep Space Station 13 (DSS-13) radio dish antenna, also known as "Venus," which is situated at the DSN's Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California.

Who is Missy Elliott?

Missy Elliott is a well-known American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. She is considered as one of the most influential female rappers in the industry. Missy Elliott won many awards, including several Grammy Awards in the span of her career. In 2019, she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and is celebrated for paving the way for women in hip-hop.

Elliott announced her enthusiasm for the occasion, saying, "I still can't believe I'm going out of this world with NASA through the Deep Space Network when 'The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)' becomes the first ever hip-hop song to transmit to space!"

NASA’s Future Venus Missions

This mission highlights NASA's continuous exploration of Venus, with future missions like DAVINCI and VERITAS planned for the next decade.

  • DAVINCI will examine Venus's atmosphere and send a probe to its surface, while
  • VERITAS will investigate Venus's geological and environmental history compared to Earth.

These missions are part of wider international collaborations, including partnerships with the European Space Agency, marking a new era in planetary exploration.

After The Beatles' "Across the Universe" in 2008, "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" is only the second musical piece the DSN has transmitted into space.
