According to the Lancet report published in the second week of January 2011, India needs more health workers as per the requirement of its large population. The Lancet report named Human Resources for Health in India estimated that India has only 20 health workers per 10000 Population. The lancet report on India also noted that there is an uneven distribution of health workers across the nation. Chandigarh has 23.2 health workers per 10000 Population whereas in Meghalaya the number of health workers is only 2.5 per 10000. As per the Lancet report, the number of women doctors is only 7.5 per 10000 in Chandigarh and 0.26 per thousand in Bihar.
The lancet report was prepared after calculating the numbers of allopathic doctors, nurses and pharmacists in India. The Lancet report also included practitioners of Ayurveda, Homeopathy and others.
