Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez inaugurated Tata Advanced Systems' new facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, on October 28. This is India’s first private factory for building military aircraft.
Earlier, PM Modi and Spanish PM Sanchez participated in a roadshow in Vadodara. They rode in an open jeep and greeted people gathered along the route.
India’s First Factory for Military Aircraft
Tata Advanced Systems facility in Vadodara is India’s first private-sector assembly line for military aircraft. The facility will build 40 C-295 aircraft.
Tata Advanced Systems will produce these aircraft, while Airbus will supply an additional 16 aircraft directly.
India to Get 56 Military Aircraft
Under the agreement, a total of 56 military aircraft will be produced, with 16 delivered directly by Airbus. Tata Advanced Systems will build the remaining 40 aircraft at its Vadodara facility in India. Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for this facility in October 2022.
This facility will build a complete ecosystem to handle every step of the aircraft’s life cycle—from manufacturing and assembly to testing, delivery, and maintenance. Leading defense companies like Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics will also support this program.
Why This Aircraft Plant is Important?
With the opening of this aircraft facility in Gujarat, India aims to become more self-reliant in defense manufacturing. This will also boost the country’s defense technology. The project supports PM Modi’s Make in India initiative.
- Increased Employment Rate: Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and its partners will require over 1 million labor hours to assemble each aircraft. Thus increasing the employment rate in the country.
- A boost for the Private Sector: This is the first military aircraft assembly plant in India’s private sector, set up by Tata-Airbus. It marks a significant boost for private sector involvement in defense production.
- Local Manufacturing & Self-Reliance: This plant is a major step towards 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat.' The 40 C-295 aircraft produced here will support India’s goal of self-reliance in defense equipment.
New Job Opportunities in India
The launch of the Tata-Airbus plant will create new job opportunities in India’s aviation sector. The project is expected to provide over 3,000 direct jobs across various locations and over 15,000 indirect jobs within the supply chain.
