DRDO successfully test fired HSTDV

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully test fired Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) from Odisha coast. DRDO test fired HSTDV from launch complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) on Abdul Kalam Island in the Bay of Bengal.

It was launched to prove a number of critical technologies for futuristic missions. Various electro-optical tracking sensors, telemetry stations and radars tracked the vehicle through its course. After this test DRDO has collected the data and now it will be analysed to validate the critical technologies.

What is HSTDV?

•    Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle in short it is known as HSTDV. It is an unmanned scramjet demonstration aircraft.
•    It is designed to cruise at Mach 6 speed with scramjet engine up to an altitude of 32.5 kilometres in 20 seconds.
•    HSTDV is dual-use technology thus with a scramjet engine, HSTDV can cruise at Mach 6 speed and can have multiple civilian applications.
•    It can be used for launching satellites at low cost and can also be available for long-range cruise missiles of future.
•    The design for airframe attachment with the engine was completed in the year 2004.

HSTDV Features

•    Their weight is up to 1-metric-ton and length is 5.6-meter (18-ft.). This vehicle is under construction that features a flattened octagonal cross section with mid-body stub-wings and raked tail fins and a 3.7-meter rectangular section air intake.
•    The scramjet engine is located under the mid-body, with the serving as part of the exhaust nozzle. Construction work of its powerful engine is also in progress.
•    Two parallel fences in the fore-body are meant to reduce spillage and increase thrust.
•    Part span flaps are provided at the trailing edge of the wings for roll control.
•    A deflectable nozzle cowl at the combustor end can deflect up to 25 degree to ensure satisfactory performance during power-off and power-on phases.

About Scram-Jet technology

In scram-jet technology, fuel combustion takes place in a chamber in missile at supersonic speeds while in a ram jet system, the system collects air it needs from atmosphere during flight at subsonic speeds and propellants burn in combustion chamber.
