India’s first anticlockwise racing track, the Coimbatore Auto Sports and Transport Trust (CoASTT) High-Performance Centre, has been built near Karumathampatti on the city’s outskirts, at a cost of around Rs 50 crore.
The 3.8 km long track, completed a few months ago, is designed to meet the standards of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).
India’s First Anti-clockwise Racing Track Features
While it is built to meet FIA's grade-2 standards, it will be homologated as grade-3. The track's minimum width is 12 meters, and the front straight measures 15 meters wide. It also includes 15 exciting corners and has the potential to host international and national Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula 4, and Formula E races.
Who Built this Racetrack?
This racetrack, the second in Coimbatore and the third in the state, was created by Apex Circuit Design Ltd. in the UK with help from Formula One drivers Narain Karthikeyan and Arjun Balu. According to a number of sources, Coimbatore is the only location in India with two FIA-compliant racetracks.
Go-Karting in Coimbatore
Additionally, there is a 1,012-meter-long go-kart-only circuit. Training will be available to students and young people here Tuesday through Friday from 1 pm to 9 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 9 pm. There are various packages for go-kart training sessions.
Cost of Race Track
Yohann J Setna, CEO of CoASTT High-Performance Centre, mentioned that they acquired 111 acres of land in 1986 to build India’s first anticlockwise racing track.
"Apart from the land cost, we have spent about Rs 50 crore on the track and other facilities so far. We aim to complete safety norms and other requirements by August 2025, after which we can host Formula 4 events." He added that their goal is to promote motorsports in India, with a focus on automobile-related leisure activities, testing, and research projects.
