JCT on 20 June 2011 decided to disband its Phagwara-based popular football club, JCT Phagwara stating lack of exposure and visibility as the reasons behind the decision. They were forced to take the decision to discontinue the team three weeks after they were relegated from the I-League. Former national league champions, JCT were struggling financially for the past few seasons.
The Punjab side was formed in 1971 and was always considered the flag bearers of football in north India.
JCT, who won the inaugural national I-League in 1996-97, were the second corporate team to wind up their football activities in recent times after Mahindra & Mahindra. Mahindra United also closed their shop because of poor visibility of the I-League in 2010.
The reason cited by both the corporate for wind up the teams was lack of mileage from the I-League. Their decision came as a rude shock for the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
