Mahatma Gandhi’s Ashes Immersed in the Indian Ocean

Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi in a ritual on 30 Jan 2010 immersed the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi in the Indian Ocean off the South African coast.

Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi in a ritual on 30 Jan 2010 immersed the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi in the Indian Ocean off the South African coast. 30 Jan marked leader’s 62nd death anniversary. Ela Gandhi received the ashes from a family friend and South African businessman Chagan “Chotoo” Thakur Bhoola who got Gandhi’s ashes from Bombay to South Africa in 1948. The ashes were immersed in the Indian Ocean as it links the two countries- South Africa and India.
