Pandit Jasraj conferred with Sumitra Charat Ram Award 2014 for Lifetime Achievement

Veteran classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj was on 17 November 2014 conferred with the Sumitra Charat Ram Award 2014 for Lifetime Achievement.

Pandit Jasraj joined the list of eminent personalities who were honoured with the award earlier including Pt Birju Maharaj, Kishori Amonkar and Mayadhar Raut.

The award function marked the beginning of a year-long celebrations to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Ram who was born on 17 November 1914 in Meerut.

Sumitra Charat Ram Award
The award was instituted in 2011 to honour stalwarts in art and was named after Sumitra Charat Ram who founded the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in 1952.

She was instrumental in successfully resurrecting Kathak under the banner of the Shriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra.

• Pandit Jasraj is often referred to as Sangeet Martand for his virtuosity.
• Pt Jasraj was born in 1990 in Hisar and hails from a family which has produced three generations of musicians belonging to the Mewati gharana.
• He had his initial training from his illustrious father Pandit Motiram and then learnt under his famed elder brother Maniram.
• His spiritual guru has been the Maharaja of Sanand, Maharaja Jayvant Singh where he was the court musician.
• Endowed with a rich and resonant voice, Pt Jasraj has done a lot of research on the Haveli sangeet.
• Previously Pandit Jasraj has been awarded with a number of titles, including Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
