On November 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the second foreign dignitary to be granted the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Nigeria's second-highest national honour. In 1969, Queen Elizabeth became the first foreigner to receive the GCON.
After receiving the award from Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, PM Modi thanked the President. He further dedicated the honour to India’s 140 crore people, emphasizing the close friendship between India and Nigeria.
PM Modi Honoured in Nigeria
“I am honoured to receive the 'Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger' Award from Nigeria. I humbly accept it and dedicate it to the 140 crore people of India and the strong friendship between India and Nigeria,” said PM Modi.
Modi highlighted the deep connection between the two countries, emphasizing their shared commitment to democracy and economic growth.
PM Modi's Three-Nation Tour
PM Modi arrived in Abuja on Sunday as part of his three-nation tour from November 17 to 21, which includes visits to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana.
On his arrival, PM Modi was warmly received by Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, Nigeria's Minister for the Federal Capital Territory. As a mark of respect, he was presented with the symbolic 'Key to the City' of Abuja, showcasing the trust and admiration the Nigerian people have for him.
