Just a few days after Justice Sanjiv Khanna assumed his position as India's Chief Justice, a fresh circular concerning Supreme Court case hearings was released on November 16.

The new circular states that Wednesdays and Thursdays would not be used for normal hearing matters.

Supreme Court New Circular

The circular stated that starting now, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, after notice, miscellaneous matters like Transfer Petitions and Bail Matters will be scheduled. Regular hearing matters will not be listed on Wednesdays and Thursdays until further notice.

The new circular issued by the Supreme Court states that:

"Henceforth, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after notice miscellaneous matters, including Transfer Petitions and Bail Matters shall be listed and no regular hearing matter shall be listed on Wednesday and Thursday till further orders."

The circular further stipulates that part-heard cases or special bench matters, whether regular or miscellaneous, scheduled for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays would be heard in the post-lunch session or as instructed by the appropriate authority. This new arrangement will stay in place, until further notice.

Supreme Court Schedule Details

According to the current practice, there are days designated for each type of petition in the Supreme Court:

  • Fresh admission cases are scheduled on Mondays and Fridays, known as miscellaneous days.
  • Regular hearings, including final case hearings, are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This change is the first major reform introduced by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, who took office as the 51st CJI on November 11. The aim of this move is to reduce the backlog of cases in the Supreme Court, which currently stands at 83,410.
