Retired High Court judge Justice Chandrashekaraiah was sworn in as the second Upa Lokayukta of Karnataka on 22 January 2012 amid controversy over violations of housing society bylaws. Governor H.R. Bhardwaj administered the oath of office to Justice Chandrashekaraiah, who had also served as president of the Karnataka State Consumer Redressal Commission.
Justice Chandrashekaraiah will be the second Upa Lokayukta along with Justice S.B. Majage. Justice Majage will have jurisdiction of 13 districts while Justice Gururajan will investigate cases arising from 17 districts.
The post of the second Upa Lokayukta was vacant since the resignation of Justice R. Gururajan in October 2011. Justice R. Gururajan had resigned citing health issues.
Justice Chandrashekaraiah was allotted a 4,000 sqft site in Judicial Layout in 1997, when he already owned a house in Banashankari 2nd Stage. Similar violation of housing society bylaws had led to the resignation of Justice Shivraj Patil as Lokayukta in September 2011.
Justice Chandrashekaraiah has served as judge of the Karnataka High Court between 1995 and 2004 and as president of the Consumer Redressal between 2004 and 2009.
