The Supreme Court of India on 29 June 2011 restrained the West Bengal government from distributing to farmers in Singur the land it had taken back from Tata Motors until further orders by (Calcutta) High Court.
A vacation bench of Supreme Court inlcuding Justices P Sathasivam and AK Patnaik gave the order. However, the court made it clear that it was an interim arrangement only, not any opinion expressed by the court. The decision will be given by the Calcutta High Court in this matter.
