The Supreme Court of India, on 28 March 2011, ruled that political parties who damage public properties should be de-recognised.
A bench of Supreme Court comprising Justices GS Singhvi and AK Ganguly gave the ruling.
The Supreme Court observed that rail and road traffic often become casualties because of violent acts by the agitators. The court raised the question that why state governments should not be made liable to pay the railways for the loss suffered because of such incidents.
The bench ruled that during the hearing of a petition on an 11-day agiatation organised by the Khap panchayats. The centre pointed out that the railways suffered a loss of 33.95 crore Rupees because of the agitations.
