The Tribal Development Cooperative Corporation of Odisha Ltd (TDCCOL) on 17 July 2013 opened the outlet called Tribal World at the Biju Patnaik Airport in Bhubaneswar, in order to put on the podium tribal art as well as heritage of Odisha. Tribal World outlet was inaugurated by the ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare Minister Lal Bihari Himirika.
The initiative by TDCCOL will enable the tourists to buy tribal handloom as well as handicraft products from the outlet. As the beginning, TDCCOL decided to portray as well as sell the deteriorating tribal art forms such as handicrafts of Gond tribe and paintings of Saura and Juang tribes. The specialty of these products is that they will be sold along with the write-ups that explain and indicate about the importance of handicraft and contribution of tribal community behind it.
All the products will be procured directly from tribal artisans. These will be sold under the brand name of Tribes Odisha. The primary aim of this initiative is promotion of the products that are made by tribal. This initiative will provide better livelihood as well as sustenance to the tribals.
It is important to note that there is an extensive demand of authentic Odisha tribal products among various tourists. Airport is the best gateway for the promotion of these products. Apart from the Bhubaneswar airport, TDCCOL also decided to commence the Tribal World outlets at New Delhi and Kolkata airports on public-private partnership (PPP) mode in 2013-14 financial year.
It has been decided that apart from these, eight other such outlets will be started at different places in Odisha in 2013 itself. One of these outlets is already next to completion at Puri. Apart from this, TDCCOL is also under negotiation with Director of Biju Patnaik Airport to include write-ups in context with the tribal art of Odisha in flight magazines.
There are Tribal World showrooms at Unit-VIII in Bhubaneswar, Koraput and Rourkela already. All the products are also e-marketed through TDCCOL website.
